Oblation Table

The Oblation Table, also known as the Prothesis or Proskomedia table, holds a central role in Orthodox Christian worship, situated within the sanctuary area of the church. It is a small, typically rectangular table located on the north side of the altar, used by the priest for the preparation of the bread and wine before the Divine Liturgy. The term "Prothesis" originates from the Greek word meaning "setting forth" or "offering," highlighting its purpose as the place where the gifts of bread and wine are prepared and offered to God during the Eucharistic celebration. The Oblation Table is adorned with sacred vessels, including the Diskos (paten) and the Chalice, as well as implements such as the spear and spoon used in the Eucharistic offering. Here, the priest performs the Proskomedia, a solemn service of preparation involving prayers, the cutting of the prosphora (liturgical bread), and the arrangement of particles symbolizing various aspects of salvation history, including the Theotokos, the saints, and the living and departed faithful. Through the ritual enacted at the Oblation Table, Orthodox Christians affirm the mystical union between the earthly and heavenly realms, anticipating the transformative encounter with the risen Christ in the sacrament of Holy Communion.
