Ripidia (Fans)

Ripidia, commonly known as liturgical fans, are ceremonial objects used in Orthodox Christian worship to honor the Holy Eucharist and signify the presence of the divine. Traditionally made of precious metals like gold or silver and adorned with intricate designs, ripidia consist of two fan-shaped panels mounted on long handles. The fans are often decorated with images of angels, seraphim, or other symbols representing the heavenly hosts. During the celebration of the Divine Liturgy, the ripidia are solemnly waved over the Holy Gifts—the consecrated bread and wine—as an act of reverence and adoration. This gentle fanning gesture symbolizes the angels' constant worship of God and their role in ministering to humanity. In Orthodox theology, the ripidia serve as a visual reminder of the mystical union between heaven and earth that takes place during the Eucharistic sacrifice. The rhythmic motion of the ripidia also evokes a sense of awe and wonder, enhancing the sacred atmosphere of the liturgical service. Additionally, the ripidia are believed to dispel any insects or impurities that may come near the Holy Gifts, underscoring their role in safeguarding the sanctity of the Eucharistic elements. As such, ripidia hold a special place in Orthodox worship, embodying the Church's profound reverence for the sacrament of the Holy Eucharist and its belief in the real presence of Christ among the faithful.
